Incheon is...
Incheon has been trading with foreign countries since the Three Kingdoms Period, and was the first city in Korea to accept Western culture in 1883. Throughout its history, Incheon has been at the center of Korea’s modernization.
Today, more than 2.7 million people live in its 10 districts, called ‘gus’ and ‘guns,’ as well as on the more than 150 beautiful islands of Ganghwa-gun and Ongjin-gun.
International city linking Northeast Asia to the world
Incheon continues to pursue a comprehensive program of development and growth through a diverse range of projects: expansion of Incheon Harbor; opening of the Incheon Subway (1999.10); opening of Incheon International Airport (2001.03); public water land reclamation works; establishment of various industrial and exchange complexes; construction of tourism/leisure complexes and new residential complexes; expansion of expressways; enhancement of education and cultural facilities; development of Songdo New City; opening of the Free Economic Zone Authority (2003.10); opening of Incheon Bridge (2009.10); development of the Cheongna and Yeongjong areas; city restoration projects; and hosting the Asian Games Incheon 2014.
Under the motto ‘Turning walls into doors,’ Incheon is facing new challenges and creating new visions to become the advance base of peaceful exchange and collaboration between South and North Korea and, ultimately, the nation’s economic capital. Achievements such as the inducement of KRW 2 trillion of investment in the Songdo Samsung Bio Complex and construction of the Asian Games Incheon 2014’s main stadium attest to the capability and vitality of Incheon Metropolitan City.
